The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has withdrawn the licences of 574 schools across Nigeria due to their involvement in examination malpractice
Announcing the development at a pre-examination press briefing on Thursday, Head of Nigeria National Office, Dr. Josiah Dangut, emphasized that the move is part of efforts to clamp down on malpractice and restore integrity to the examination process.
“574 schools are those ones that have got their licences revoked as far as examination centre is concerned. So, we will not conduct examinations there. We don’t know them as far as conduct of examination is concerned,” he stated.
Dr. Dangut further revealed that all examination bodies will uphold sanctions placed on any centre found guilty of malpractice, noting that such information will be shared across relevant bodies to prevent repeat violations.
The WAEC chief disclosed that no fewer than 1,973,253 candidates from 23,554 schools will sit for the first-ever Computer-Based West African Senior School Certificate Examination (CB-WASSCE) for school candidates. The exam will be held from April 24 to June 20, covering 74 subjects.
He added that this year’s candidate enrollment increased by 158,627, attributing the growth partly to the mandatory inclusion of the National Identification Number (NIN) during registration, as directed by the Federal Government.
On result timelines, Dangut said WAEC will release results 45 days after the last paper, while certificates will be printed and issued to schools within 90 days.
He also noted that, starting this year, no two candidates will receive the exact same set of questions for any number, a measure aimed at curbing widespread examination malpractice.
