WhatsApp has introduced usernames, allowing users to connect with others without revealing their phone numbers as part of a new privacy-focused update

The Meta-owned messaging platform announced that the feature will begin rolling out globally over the coming months to its more than three billion users.

Starting Monday, users will be able to claim their preferred usernames directly within the app. While the option will be available to everyone, using a username will remain voluntary.

With the new feature, people can share their unique usernames instead of their phone numbers when starting conversations, giving users more control over the personal information they disclose.

WhatsApp said usernames can be changed or removed whenever users choose, and existing safety features, including blocking and reporting unwanted contacts, will continue to function as normal.

To reduce the risk of impersonation, usernames will be capped at 35 characters and will be subject to rules designed to prevent users from posing as celebrities, public figures, or other notable individuals.

According to the company, the update is intended to strengthen user privacy by making it possible to communicate with new contacts without exposing personal phone numbers.
