Gospel singer Tope Alabi has shared insights into her dressing style, clarifying that it was a personal decision rather than a divine directive
“I love fashion, but I don’t have the money for it. God has not told me not to wear earrings, necklaces, or wigs. Covering my hair in church was my own decision,” she said.
Alabi explained that she intentionally covers her hair while ministering, except when unexpectedly called to sing while wearing a wig. She also highlighted her background in theatre, stating that her outfit choices in music videos are carefully planned to align with the song’s theme.
“If you see me without earrings in a video, it’s because I decided not to wear them. I understand what fits each music video. In the past, people didn’t see me with big earrings because I couldn’t afford them, not because of any rule.”
Addressing claims that she has become a “worldly” singer due to her evolving fashion sense, Alabi questioned the logic behind such criticisms.
“Why would I wear earrings when singing about hardship? Do suffering people wear earrings? Back then, I couldn’t afford them. But as time passed, God answered my prayers, and my husband and I progressed gradually by God’s grace.
“Now that I can afford the earrings I like, some say I have become worldly. They even claim my complexion has changed—saying I was dark before and now fair. Are they my parents? Do they know that hardship can affect someone’s skin tone?”
