A widow named Alhakatu Abdulkarim and her five children died after eating a local dish called Danwake in Karkari village, located in Gwarzo Local Government Area of Kano State.

The Kano Police Command reported that the family was taken to Gwarzo General Hospital in serious condition, where they were later confirmed dead. The police suspect the meal was made with expired cassava flour, but they are still waiting for the medical report to confirm the cause of death.

SP Abdullahi Haruna, the spokesperson for the Kano police, said, “The six members of the family who ate the food were rushed to Gwarzo General Hospital where they were confirmed dead by doctors. We are still waiting for the medical report from the hospital to ascertain the cause of the death of the six persons.”

The victims were identified as Alhakatu Abdulkarim and her five children: Bashir, Firdausi, Hafsat, Usman, and Jamilu. As the investigation continues, the police have urged the public to be cautious when preparing and consuming food, especially when using potentially expired or unsafe ingredients.

“We are urging people to be very careful and ensure that the food they prepare and consume is safe,” SP Abdullahi advised.
