William Davis, a college football defensive back preparing for his first season with Sam Houston State University, has died at the age of 22 after suffering g^nshot wounds to the chest.
According to TMZ, authorities in Virginia have not yet determined whether the case will be ruled a homicide. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner confirmed that the official manner of death remains pending.
The university announced Davis’ death on Saturday but did not initially disclose further details surrounding the circumstances.
Davis was set to begin what would have been his seventh year in college football. Before joining Sam Houston State University, he spent last season with West Virginia University, where he appeared in one game for the Mountaineers.
He previously built most of his collegiate career at Virginia Union University, an HBCU program where he played 36 games as a defensive back before transferring to West Virginia.
Following his move through the transfer portal, Davis chose Sam Houston State University as the next stop in his football journey earlier this year. After taking part in offseason workouts and spring camp with the program, he later returned to Virginia during the summer break.
Davis’ sudden death has sent shockwaves through the college football community, with former teammates, coaches, and fans mourning a player whose journey spanned multiple programs and years of dedication to the sport. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting as questions remain unanswered.
