Grammy-winning singer Tems has spoken out about the disrespect she believes women face in the Nigerian music industry

In an interview with BBC, she shared her personal struggles to be taken seriously at the beginning of her career due to her gender.
She said: “People don’t really respect women in the [music] industry,”
Tems now aims to empower women in music through her new platform, The Leading Vibe Initiative, which seeks to provide them with greater access to opportunities, wider audiences, and success.
Tems advises aspiring female artists to define their goals, brand, and boundaries, knowing what they’re willing to do – or not do – for fame.
“What are the things that you wouldn’t do for fame and the things that you would do?”
Her concerns echo those of other prominent Nigerian female artists, such as Tiwa Savage and Yemi Alade, who have also highlighted the challenges they face in the industry due to their gender.
