Human rights activist and lawyer, Dele Farotimi has called for a fundamental change in the way Nigeria is governed, arguing that the country needs restructuring and a new vision that can bring people together.
In a post, Farotimi questioned whether Nigerians’ votes would be enough to bring about political change, expressing concern about the role of the judiciary and the state of the country’s democracy.
He said;
“Your votes do not count, and the judiciary will endorse it unless we decide to do something about it. We are sleeping while a dictatorship is being installed in our country, demon-cratically.
“I believe it is time to tell ourselves the truth. The only way to save Nigeria is to restructure it, reimagine it, find a way to bring together a critical mass of its victims, sell them a new vision of the country, draw a line in the sand, and confront the system.
“One thing I have never been shy about is telling you what it will take to save Nigeria. It will take a revolution to save Nigeria. That revolution might come through the ballot, but I am not convinced it will. However, if sufficient numbers of people are persuaded to believe in the VISION, not the personal vision for a new Nigeria placed on the ballot then change becomes possible.
“If you do not place the vision for a new Nigeria on the ballot, you cannot mobilise the people to stand behind their votes. That is why the distraction has been entirely about politics.
“When a leader emerges who understands the importance of visioning, places that vision on the ballot, and mobilises the Nigerian people to stand behind it, we may witness a democratic revolution.”
