Chairman of the Kano State chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Zahraddeen Saleh, confirmed the devastating news.
According to Saleh, the victims included athletes, journalists, medical staff, and sports administrators.
The State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Mustapha Kwankwaso, also confirmed the incident in an official statement, describing it as a deeply painful moment for the entire state.
“On behalf of the Kano State Government and the good people of the state, I extend heartfelt sympathies to the affected athletes, officials, and their families,” Kwankwaso said.
He noted that several others sustained injuries in the accident and are currently receiving medical treatment.
“This is a deeply painful moment for all of us. We are devastated by the news of the ghastly accident that occurred as our athletes were returning home after representing our great state with pride and commitment,” he added.
Kwankwaso assured the public that the government would ensure the victims and their families receive the necessary medical attention and support. He also thanked first responders and medical teams for their swift action.
The commissioner emphasized that a full investigation into the accident would be carried out and appropriate steps taken to prevent a recurrence. He reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to the safety and welfare of all its athletes and officials representing Kano at both national and international levels.
