Twenty-one wives of Local Government chairmen in Adamawa State have come under fire after traveling to Istanbul, Turkey, for a week-long leadership training program, despite months of unpaid salaries and pensions for local government workers and retirees
The program, which commenced last week, is reportedly aimed at equipping the women with skills to “assist and advise” their husbands in carrying out their official duties. Senior officials from the Ministry of Local Government are said to have joined the trip.
Framed as part of capacity-building efforts following recent local government autonomy reforms, the initiative has been widely criticized as “extravagant and ill-timed.”
Workers’ unions, pensioners, and social media users condemned the trip as a misuse of public resources at a time of economic hardship.
The controversy dominated online discussions between September 22 and 24, with many questioning why such training was held overseas and demanding to know how it was funded. Some noted that even the governor’s wife had not embarked on a similar trip, while an unnamed LG chairman from northern Adamawa publicly distanced himself from the decision.
Pressure is mounting for a probe into the source of funding, which critics allege came from local government allocations. As of now, neither the Adamawa State Government nor the state’s LG Association has issued a statement addressing the backlash.
