Nigerians could face a nationwide blackout in the coming days as the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) has begun an indefinite strike
The industrial action, which started Wednesday, is in protest against the non-implementation of the national minimum wage, the casualisation of workers, unpaid salaries, and several other unresolved welfare issues.

In a notice signed by Acting General Secretary Dominic Igwebike, NUEE said the strike follows the expiration of its ultimatum to the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN). The union accused TCN management of showing “a lack of regard” for staff welfare and failing to provide a clear plan to resolve the lingering issues.
“It is unfortunate that the TCN Management has decided to handle these issues with kid gloves and without any defined road map to addressing them. We cannot fold our arms while our rights are being violated and the electricity industry collapses,” the notice read.
The union directed its members to completely withdraw their services until management meets their demands, which include:
- Implementation of the national minimum wage
- End to casualisation of workers
- Provision of work tools and operational vehicles
- Payment of outstanding salaries since April 2025
- Provision of personal protective equipment (PPEs)
- Settlement of retirement benefits
- Resolution of issues arising from TCN’s unbundling
The latest strike comes months after a similar action in June 2024 that disrupted power supply nationwide.
As of the time of filing this report, TCN spokesperson Ndidi Mbah had not responded to requests for comment.
