No fewer than 248 passengers were spared a potential tragedy on Friday night after a Qatar Airways aircraft developed a technical fault mid-flight and was forced to make an emergency landing at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency confirmed that the aircraft, carrying 248 passengers and 12 crew members, encountered the fault while flying within Nigerian airspace, prompting distress signals and an immediate emergency response.

A preliminary report by LASEMA stated that the agency activated the state’s emergency response plan immediately after receiving the distress alert through its 767/112 toll-free emergency lines. Emergency landings are typically triggered by unexpected technical issues mid-air, with pilots alerting the control tower to guide the aircraft safely back to the runway.
“Following distress alerts received at the Command and Control Centre in Alausa, Ikeja, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency promptly activated the State’s Emergency Response Plans.”
The agency assured residents of its preparedness to handle emergencies, noting that the swift and coordinated actions of responders helped prevent what could have escalated into a major aviation incident.
Eyewitnesses at the airport described tense scenes as emergency personnel positioned themselves along the runway, while passengers onboard prepared for the unplanned landing.
LASEMA said its Lagos Response Team arrived to find that the aircraft had already made a forced landing due to the technical fault. Preliminary findings identified technical issues as the immediate cause of the incident.
“The pilot executed a safe landing on the runway at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport with LASEMA response teams and other emergency responders on standby.”
The pilot was commended for professionalism and composure in handling the situation while emergency teams remained on extreme high alert.
After landing, the aircraft was inspected by the pilot and engineering crew before being moved to the apron for further checks and necessary repairs. All passengers were safely evacuated, and no injuries were reported.
“All passengers of the distressed aircraft were evacuated safely, and no casualties were reported.”
LASEMA added that there was no significant damage to the aircraft and confirmed that recovery operations had been completed.
“The aircraft has been secured on the apron, recovery activities have been completed, and the rescue operation has been safely concluded.”
Emergency responders involved in the operation included LASEMA’s Command and Control Centre, LASAMBUS, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, and the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria.
The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority also confirmed the incident. “I can confirm that there was an air return. Details will be communicated later.”
As of the time of filing this report, Qatar Airways had yet to respond to enquiries sent to its country manager, Ken Chirchir.
