Building collapse in Rivers State claims one life

Tragedy struck in Rivers State yesterday when a two-story building under construction collapsed in the Egbelu Mgbaraja area of Ogbogoro Community, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area

The devastating incident occurred around 2 p.m., claiming the life of Udeme, a young man from Akwa Ibom State, and leaving another worker with severe injuries.

Eyewitness Jonathan Obey attributed the collapse to substandard materials and inadequate foundation and supports.

The Rivers State Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Evans Bipi, has condemned the developer’s actions.

Bipi declared the developer wanted, sealed the site, and warned of strong government action, stating, “This incident must serve as a warning to those building without government approval.”

Rivers State Commissioner for Special Duties, Samuel Anya, also expressed dismay, emphasizing that the owner and engineer responsible must be held accountable for prioritizing profit over safety.
