A Chinese court has sentenced former senior political adviser Han Yong to d3ath with a two-year reprieve after finding him guilty of accepting more than $36 million in bribes over a 30-year public career
According to the Nanning Intermediate People’s Court, Han, 68, exploited his influential roles in Jilin, Xinjiang, and Shaanxi provinces between 1993 and 2023 to assist companies and individuals in securing contracts, favorable business deals, and personnel promotions.
The court determined that Han accepted bribes totaling 261 million yuan (around $36.2 million), including real estate and other valuable assets. In addition to the suspended death sentence, he was permanently stripped of political rights and had all personal property confiscated. Illegally obtained assets have been turned over to the state.
Under Chinese law, a death sentence with reprieve is typically reduced to life imprisonment if the convicted individual avoids further offenses during the two-year probation period. Han, who previously served as chair of the Shaanxi Provincial Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), cooperated with investigators, admitted guilt, and returned the illicit funds—factors that contributed to the court’s decision to grant leniency.
His downfall began in October 2023 when the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection (CCDI), China’s top anti-corruption body, opened an investigation into “serious violations of laws and regulations.” He was expelled from the Communist Party in April 2024.
Han’s sentencing follows closely after another major case: Zhao Weiguo, former chairman of Tsinghua Unigroup, also received a suspended death sentence last week for large-scale financial crimes. Both rulings underscore China’s ongoing crackdown on corruption among political and business elites.
