The Bayer Leverkusen forward, who has made 13 appearances for the Super Eagles since his debut in 2023, shared an emotional message expressing gratitude for the opportunity to represent his country.

“Proud to play for my country and a dream for me also. Really enjoyed every moment — the good and the bad. Thanks a lot, thank you all. I don hang boot,” Boniface wrote.

The phrase “I don hang boot” is a popular Nigerian Pidgin expression meaning “I’ve retired.”

His announcement comes shortly after Nigeria’s 1–1 draw against Russia, where Boniface started the match but failed to find the net once again. He was substituted in the second half, and his replacement, Tolu Arokodare, scored Nigeria’s equalizer.

Boniface, known for his strength and technical ability, struggled to replicate his club form on the international stage, ending his short stint with the national team without a single goal.
