Former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), has formally resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC) and joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC)

Malami announced his defection on Tuesday, July 2, 2025, aligning himself with the newly unveiled ADC-led opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections. In a statement, he said his decision was driven by a deep patriotic concern for Nigeria’s worsening socio-economic and security challenges, not by personal ambition.
“The state of the nation demands urgent intervention,” Malami said. “Rising insecurity, economic hardship, mass unemployment, and the collapse of public trust in governance have made it clear that change is not just necessary—it’s overdue.”
He criticized the APC-led administration, warning that the country is on a dangerous path unless new leadership anchored on justice, competence, and inclusion emerges. Malami said the ADC coalition presents a credible platform to restore hope and reposition Nigeria for meaningful progress.
Reaching out to supporters in his home state of Kebbi, Malami assured them that his defection reflects a renewed commitment to amplifying their voices and working toward a better future for all Nigerians.
With this move, Malami joins a growing list of prominent political figures aligning with the ADC, which recently restructured its leadership to serve as the platform for a unified opposition front against the ruling party in 2027.
