In a communique issued on Tuesday, July 8, following an emergency State Wing Executive Council (SWEC) meeting in Abuja, the union directed all striking primary school teachers across the FCT to resume work on Wednesday, July 9.

The suspension follows the implementation of the new minimum wage and the payment of five months’ arrears into teachers’ accounts on July 8, 2025.

“The union appeals to all primary school teachers in the FCT to return to their classrooms and resume their legitimate duties,” the communique stated, assuring that efforts are ongoing to secure full settlement of all outstanding entitlements.

The union also announced plans to constitute a special committee within two weeks to harmonize all unresolved arrears and explore sustainable funding sources for permanent resolution.

The communique recalled that the strike, which began on March 24, 2025, persisted until the intervention of the FCT Minister on July 3. A follow-up emergency meeting was held on July 4 to consider the minister’s offer, which included:

  • The release of N16 billion—representing six months of 10% FCT Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) meant for Area Councils—to support the payment of the June salary under the new minimum wage and cover 60% of nine-month arrears.
  • The possibility of the FCT Administration (FCTA) taking over direct payment of primary school teachers’ salaries.

Although the SWEC criticized the “insensitivity and lack of commitment” shown by some primary education stakeholders, it applauded the FCT Minister’s mediation and the role of key participants, including:

  • The Chairman, House Committee on FCT
  • The Chairman, House Committee on Area Councils
  • The FCT Head of Service
  • The Permanent Secretary, Treasury
  • Executives of the NUT and others.

The union expressed deep appreciation to its members—especially the primary school teachers—for their resilience and solidarity throughout the industrial action.

“We also extend our special thanks to the FCT royal fathers, civil society organizations, and other well-meaning Nigerians who stood with us and supported our cause,” the union added.
