Yilwatda, who currently serves as Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, is a former university lecturer and hails from Plateau State. He was also the APC governorship candidate in Plateau during the 2023 general elections.

His emergence followed a late-night meeting in Abuja between President Bola Tinubu and APC governors, where a consensus was reached to back his candidacy. The party’s National Executive Committee is expected to ratify his appointment later today.

At 56, his nomination aligns with the party’s zoning formula, which reserves the chairmanship for the North-Central region—comprising Benue, Kogi, Kwara, Nasarawa, Niger, and Plateau states.

Party insiders also revealed that his Christian background played a role in his selection. With both the President and Vice President being Muslims, leaders felt a Christian chairman would project religious balance and broaden the party’s appeal.

A senior APC figure described Yilwatda as “young, smart, well-educated, and free of political baggage.” The party is banking on his clean image and technocratic background to help rebuild public trust ahead of future elections.
