The highly anticipated La Liga clash between Barcelona and Villarreal, originally set to take place in Miami on December 20, 2025, has been canceled
This match would have marked the first regular-season Spanish league game held outside Spain. The decision follows strong opposition from multiple stakeholders.

Real Madrid complained to Spain’s Sports Ministry, arguing that moving the fixture abroad disrupted the league’s traditional home-and-away format. The La Liga players’ union, AFE, criticized the lack of consultation, while players staged silent protests across other league matches.
Event promoter Relevent said there was insufficient time to organize the game properly and warned that selling tickets without confirmation would have been irresponsible. While both Barcelona and Villarreal supported the plan, offering fans incentives such as discounted season tickets and free travel, both clubs expressed disappointment over the cancellation.
La Liga acknowledged that the decision was a setback for efforts to expand Spanish football’s global presence and revenue. The fixture will now take place at Villarreal’s home stadium, La Cerámica, on the originally scheduled date of December 20, 2025.
