Tinubu appoints Tunji Disu as new IGP

Olatunji “Tunji” Disu has been appointed Nigeria’s 23rd Inspector‑General of Police (IGP), taking over from Kayode Egbetokun following a directive from President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday, February 23, 2026

A veteran police officer with over 30 years of service, Disu joined the Nigeria Police Force on May 18, 1992, and has steadily risen through the ranks. Born on April 13, 1966, in Lagos Island, Lagos State, he is a graduate of Lagos State University (LASU), where he earned a degree in English Education. He also holds master’s degrees in Public Administration and Criminology, Security, and Legal Psychology.

Disu has undergone extensive professional training both in Nigeria and abroad, including programs focused on small arms smuggling, internet fraud, strategic leadership, and forensic investigations.

Throughout his career, he has held several high-profile leadership positions. He served as Commander of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) in Lagos, leading proactive crime-fighting operations, and later became Head of the Intelligence Response Team (IRT), taking over following the suspension of Abba Kyari.

He has also been Commissioner of Police in Rivers State and in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, overseeing law enforcement and public safety in the nation’s capital. As Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Annex in Alagbon, Lagos, Disu strengthened investigative operations and promoted professionalism across the force.

Widely respected for his operational expertise and leadership experience, IGP Disu is set to guide the Nigeria Police Force through a period of renewed focus on public safety and crime prevention.
