The Medical and Dental Practitioners Investigation Panel (MDPIP) has suspended three doctors over alleged negligence in the care of 21-month-old Nkanu Esege, son of Nigerian author Chimamanda Adichie

The suspended doctors are Dr Tunde Majekodunmi, medical director of Euracare Multi Specialist Hospital in Lagos, Dr Titus Ogundare, and Dr Atinuke Uwajeh.

They have been barred from practising medicine in Nigeria while the case is being reviewed by the Medical and Dental Practitioners Disciplinary Tribunal.

In a statement released Tuesday and signed by its secretary, Dr Enejo Abdu, the panel said there is a prima facie case of professional misconduct against the three doctors concerning their management of the child. The investigation also identified ten other doctors with a prima facie case to answer, while eight were cleared of wrongdoing.

Nkanu Esege passed away on January 7 after being referred from Atlantis Hospital to Euracare for diagnostic tests and preparatory procedures ahead of a planned emergency medical evacuation.
