Dino Melaye, a former Senator representing Kogi West and a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has accused President Bola Tinubu of seeking a “coronation” rather than a genuine democratic contest in the 2027 general election
He also claimed that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is growing increasingly uneasy over the rising prominence of the ADC.

Speaking on Channels Television’s breakfast show on Thursday, Melaye said the APC’s concern over the ADC goes beyond ordinary political rivalry, framing it as a broader threat to democratic principles in Nigeria.
“President Bola Tinubu wants to be coronated; he doesn’t want an election,” Melaye asserted.
He further alleged that the ruling party is unsettled by an apparent “exodus” of politicians and supporters from other parties into the ADC, a development he said reveals the APC’s insecurity despite its claims of nationwide dominance.
“The APC has become so desperate. They’ve seen that the ADC is the only party in the Federal Republic of Nigeria that can challenge them. They’ve seen an exodus of movement from other parties into the ADC, and personally, I am shocked that they are scared. You say you have 32 governors, then why are you afraid?” Melaye said.
He emphasized that the current political tensions are about more than the fortunes of the ADC, describing them as a test of Nigeria’s democratic health.
“So, it is not about the ADC; it is about democracy,” he added.
