Nigerian singer Lojay has been reflecting on how his idea of fame has completely changed since stepping fully into the music spotlight.
Speaking on the I Said What I Said podcast, the “Monalisa” crooner admitted that when he was still coming up, he had a very different picture of what life as a successful artiste would look like.
According to him, he once assumed fame would come with a carefree lifestyle filled with attention from women and constant indulgence. But reality, he says, turned out differently.
“There is a lot of temptation in the music industry. You will see a lot of things, but you are not meant to touch. I used to think I would frolic with a lot of ladies because there are babes everywhere. But when you have about 100 girls talking to you, that is when you need to cultivate discipline,” he explained.
He stressed that being in the industry exposes artistes to a lot of distractions, but staying focused is what separates long-lasting careers from short-lived success.
Lojay also pointed to the “Big 3” in Afrobeats as examples of artistes who have managed to stay relevant over time, saying their longevity comes down to discipline and careful choices.
“I realised if you want a long career like the Big 3, you have to stay away from too many girls,” he added.
Beyond the glamorous image people often see from the outside, he noted that fame comes with structure, responsibility, and constant awareness of public perception.
He added that many artistes are actually more disciplined than people assume, mainly because protecting their image is part of the job.
For him personally, Lojay said he has been able to stay grounded by understanding the pressures that come with success and learning how to manage relationships and distractions without letting them affect his career.
