The Ekiti State Police Command has opened an investigation into the de.aths of three people following a stampede at a hotel in Ikere-Ekiti
The incident, which occurred in the early hours of April 19, took place at Emirate Hotel, according to a statement issued on Monday in Ado-Ekiti by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Sunday Abutu.
Those who d!ed included a member of the hotel’s staff and two students of Bamidele Olumiluwa University of Education, Science and Technology, Ikere-Ekiti.
Abutu said initial findings indicated that the students had visited the hotel to celebrate their convocation ceremony held a day earlier.
“During the party, which extended into the early hours of the following day, two yet-to-be-identified students engaged in an argument that escalated into a fight.
“Other attendees attempted to flee the premises, resulting in a stampede that claimed the lives of the victims,” he said.
He added that the remains of the deceased had been deposited in a morgue for autopsy.
The Commissioner of Police, Mr Falade Adegoroye, has expressed condolences to the bereaved families and assured that a thorough investigation is underway.
