President William Ruto has taken a swipe at Nigeria’s economy and even its English usage, responding to comments made by Bola Tinubu suggesting Nigerians are faring better than citizens of some other African nations
Tinubu made the remarks while in Bayelsa State during the commissioning of major projects, where he defended his government’s handling of the economy despite public frustration over rising fuel costs.

“It is very important that we are honest with our people. Yes, I hear you from various angles of the economy. The fuel price is biting hard, but look around, let us thank God together, that you are better off. Listen to them in Kenya and other African countries and what they are going through. We will not look back. We will continue to fine way to ameliorate the sufferings of the vulnerable.”
Reacting in a video, Ruto rejected the comparison, highlighting Nigeria’s struggles with infrastructure—especially its long-standing electricity issues—while also making a pointed remark about how Nigerians speak English.
“Our education is good. Our English is good. We speak the best English in the world. If you listen to a Nigerian speak English, you’ll need a translator. We’ve the best human capital anywhere in the world.”
The back-and-forth comes at a time when many African economies are grappling with mounting challenges, including surging fuel prices tied to global supply disruptions and tensions affecting key oil routes like the Strait of Hormuz.
The exchange has triggered mixed reactions online, with critics questioning both the comparison between countries and the tone adopted by the two leaders.
