Britain’s King Charles and Queen Camilla arrived in the United States on Monday for a four-day visit, where they were received by Donald Trump, a self-described royal admirer, despite ongoing policy differences between Washington and London over the Iran war
The trip is regarded as the most significant and high-profile of King Charles’ reign, coinciding with the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Declaration of Independence from Britain. It also marks the first visit by a British monarch to the United States in about 20 years.
After touching down at Joint Base Andrews, where a short welcoming ceremony was held, the royal couple made their way to the White House. There, they were greeted by Trump and First Lady Melania Trump. Melania exchanged cheek kisses with both the king and queen, while Trump shook their hands. The group briefly posed for photographs before heading inside for a private tea meeting.
Later in the day, Charles and Camilla attended a garden reception at the newly renovated residence of the British ambassador. A choir performed both the British and American national anthems during the event.
The couple also met with guests including media executives, Washington social figures, and officials such as U.S. Senator Ted Cruz, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, and several foreign ambassadors.
Their schedule for the week includes a Tuesday address to Congress, a formal state dinner at the White House, and a Wednesday visit to New York City. The Washington portion of the trip is taking place amid heightened tension in the capital following the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner shooting on Saturday.
