Nigerian actress and filmmaker, Funke Akindele, has shared why she stopped going to church, pointing to repeated experiences that made it difficult for her to participate in services.
Speaking on the issue, she said her presence often drew attention away from worship, as people were more interested in taking photos of her. “I stopped going to church because every time I go people focus on taking my pictures,” she said.
Akindele explained that the situation made it hard for her to concentrate, as the environment no longer felt private or calm.
Her comments reflect the challenges that come with public recognition, especially in settings where individuals typically expect quiet and reflection.
She did not say whether she intends to return to attending church regularly.
Her decision reflects a desire for a more private and distraction-free space for worship. It also points to the difficulty of maintaining personal moments in public spaces, where attention can sometimes shift away from the purpose of the gathering.
