Former Edo State governor and Senator, Adams Oshiomhole, has openly called for the resignation of Senate President Godswill Akpabio, insisting that the Senate leadership is being undermined by what he described as moral and constitutional inconsistencies in the chamber’s recent rule changes

Oshiomhole made the remarks during a press interview inside the National Assembly complex, where he strongly criticised the amendment of the Senate’s standing rules and the leadership style of Akpabio.

According to him, the controversy centres on the eligibility requirements for presiding officers of the Senate, which he believes are being selectively enforced.

He argued that Akpabio himself benefited from existing rules that allowed him to rise through the ranks, noting that the Senate President became a principal officer early in his legislative career.

“Now let me say why this has serious moral issues. The Senate President became minority leader on his first day in office when he first came into the Senate…,” Oshiomhole said.

He further stated that Akpabio has not completed what he described as an “eight-year benchmark” that, in his view, should form part of the qualification for occupying the position of Senate President if the new rules are enforced.

“If we pass rules that say you must do eight consecutive years before you can be Senate President, it means he has to lead by example by vacating, because he is presiding without acquiring the appropriate qualification,” he added.

Oshiomhole also questioned the rationale behind changing Senate rules that previously allowed past leaders like former Senate President David Mark to serve two full terms without disruption.

He warned against what he called selective reforms aimed at restricting competition, saying such moves could weaken democratic principles within the legislature.

More sharply, Oshiomhole insisted that if the new eligibility rules are adopted, Akpabio should step down in order to demonstrate fairness and consistency in leadership.
