Oyo Abduction: NUT declares nationwide protest on Tuesday

The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has announced a nationwide solidarity protest scheduled for Tuesday in response to the abduction of teachers and students in Oyo State

Speaking on Monday, the National President of the union, Mr. Audu Titus Amba, said the NUT was awaiting the safe release of the kidnapped victims and expressed deep concern over the worsening security situation affecting schools across the country.

Amba condemned what he described as the alarming trend of terrorists using abducted teachers and students as human shields, saying it was complicating rescue operations and endangering lives.

He stressed that the safety of schools must be prioritised, warning that learning and teaching cannot take place in unsafe environments.

“I don’t think any Nigerian is happy with the situation on our hands. Seven of my members are currently in captivity. Enough is enough,” he said.

“If the school environment is not safe, how are we going to teach? How will the children learn? Education is critical, and our schools must be safe for teaching and learning,” he added.

The NUT president revealed that teachers in Oyo State had already been directed to withdraw their services and begin protests from Monday, while a nationwide solidarity action would follow on Tuesday.

Amba also called on government authorities to strengthen security around schools, urging community leaders to take a more active role in protecting educational institutions.

“So far, it appears that no tangible result has come from efforts to rescue the victims. We directed teachers in Oyo State to boycott classes and begin protests from Monday. By Tuesday, teachers across the country will join in a nationwide solidarity protest,” he said.

“We are appealing to community leaders to rise to the challenge of securing our schools. Security is everyone’s responsibility, and we must work together to safeguard our pupils and students,” he said.

He further condemned the use of children as shields by armed groups, describing it as a dangerous and unacceptable development that must be urgently addressed.
