Many households and businesses in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) are increasingly turning to charcoal and firewood as the cost of cooking gas continues to rise sharply, making LPG less affordable for many consumers
The price of cooking gas in Abuja has climbed in recent months, moving from about N1,200 per kilogram to around N2,000 per kilogram. Industry operators attribute the increase to supply shortages, higher depot charges, foreign exchange pressure, and rising transportation costs.
The surge has forced many residents to adjust their cooking methods, with traditional fuels becoming a cheaper alternative for daily use.

A food vendor in Gwarimpa, Abuja, Mayo Akinpelu, said she had no choice but to stop using cooking gas after repeated price increases made it unsustainable for her business.
She explained that she now depends on firewood and charcoal, which are more affordable and easier to buy in small quantities.
“Refilling my gas cylinder became difficult because the price kept rising. I could no longer afford it and still make reasonable profit. Right now, 12.5kg of LPG goes for N25,000.
“Firewood and charcoal are not as convenient as gas, but they help me reduce costs and keep my business running,” she said.
Akinpelu added that although customers sometimes complain about delays in food preparation, she has little choice but to continue with the alternatives in order to stay in business.
Another food vendor in Dutse, Bwari Area Council, Victory Samson, also said the price increase has severely affected her profit margin and disrupted her operations, forcing her to adjust to the rising cost of LPG.
