Actor Deyemi Okanlawon has spoken against the habit of ridiculing celebrities online, urging people to show more understanding instead of constantly criticizing those in the public eye.
The Nollywood star said many people are quick to judge celebrities without considering the realities and pressures that come with fame.
According to him, life in the spotlight is often more challenging than outsiders realize, making harsh comments and name-calling unnecessary.
Deyemi particularly expressed disappointment over the popular use of the term “yeyebrities” to mock public figures. He described the label as unfair, adding that belittling another person’s success or achievements says more about the critic than the person being criticized.
He also warned that no one can predict what the future holds, noting that the same fame people mock today could one day become part of their own family’s story.
Rather than tearing people down, he encouraged Nigerians to embrace empathy and remember that celebrities deal with personal struggles just like everyone else.
Deyemi said, “I see people who have no idea what the challenge is that people in the spotlight are facing. They just come up with a lot of things. It’s sad to see. People even call celebrities ‘yeyebrities’ because I’m like, whatever you diminish in somebody else’s life, you can never achieve. So, let’s just pray that in your lineage, nobody finds their way into the spotlight, because if that happens, then you’ve opened up the door for such things to be said about them.”
