Veteran actress, Rita Edochie has blamed late Mr Ibu for the ongoing conflict within the family, saying the situation is a painful example of the damage Polygamy can cause
Her comments come after Mr Ibu’s widow, Stella Maris, appealed for financial help following a visit from King Mitchy.
The appeal triggered one of the late actor’s sons to accuse her of selling Mr Ibu’s properties while still claiming hardship. Mr Ibu’s first wife also disputed Stella Maris’ claims and backed the son’s allegations.
Reacting in a lengthy social media post, Rita Edochie said the family crisis reinforces her long-held opposition to polygamy.
She argued that no matter how people try to glorify or defend polygamy as part of African culture, it has continued to destroy families.

“POLYGAMY HAS DONE MORE HARM THAN GOOD NOT JUST IN NIGERIA BUT IN AFRICA AS A WHOLE.
“WE MUST CALL A SPADE A SPADE. LATE MR IBU DID NOT DO WELL AT ALL!!!!!!!!”
“NO MATTER HOW WE TRY TO SUGARCOAT POLYGAMY OR PAINT IT AS A CULTURAL SUCCESS STORY, IT STILL DOES NOT CHANGE THE FACT THAT IT HAS BEEN ONE OF THE GREATEST MARITAL ERRORS THAT HAS JEOPARDIZED THE PEACE, UNITY, AND HARMONY OF COUNTLESS FAMILIES.”
According to the actress, polygamy often breeds rivalry, jealousy, unhealthy competition, bitterness, divided loyalties, inheritance disputes and prolonged family conflicts, especially after the death of the husband.
She described the current disagreements in Mr Ibu’s family as “another painful reminder” of the challenges associated with polygamous homes.
“THE SITUATION CURRENTLY PLAYING OUT IN MR IBU’S FAMILY HAS BECOME ANOTHER PAINFUL REMINDER OF HOW DIFFICULT SUCH FAMILY STRUCTURES CAN BECOME… THIS SHOULD SERVE AS A SERIOUS WARNING TO THOSE WHO ARE CURRENTLY IN POLYGAMOUS HOMES OR ARE PLANNING TO BUILD ONE TOMORROW.”
