The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has removed the officer in charge of the Ibara Medium Custodial Centre in Abeokuta, Ogun State, alongside two other principal officers, following a viral TikTok live stream by an inmate on de.ath row
The service confirmed that the inmate was in unlawful possession of a prohibited mobile phone, which has since been recovered during a search operation and secured as an exhibit.
In a statement issued on Thursday by the agency, the Controller General of Corrections, Sylvester Nwakuche, described the incident as a “serious breach of custodial security”.
The Service disclosed that the inmate had been transferred to another facility with enhanced security pending the conclusion of investigations, adding that security gaps contributing to the breach had already been identified.
Speaking on the administrative action against the officials, the NCoS stated that the CG has ordered their immediate removal to ensure an impartial investigative process.
“This administrative action is without prejudice to the final outcome of the investigation and is intended to ensure a transparent, impartial and unhindered investigative process,” the statement notes.
While the inmate’s culpability has been established, the service noted that inquiries into the possible negligence or complicity of any officer, inmate, or external collaborator are ongoing.
Nwakuche warned that anyone found to have facilitated, aided, or condoned the security breach would face severe disciplinary sanctions in accordance with extant regulations.
