Nollywood actor Sunday Afolabi has appealed to Nigerians for support after revealing his struggle since relocation
Speaking during an interview with Biola Bayo, Afolabi explained that he relocated to Badagry with the hope of building his own house, but the decision came with unexpected difficulties.
He said the distance affected his access to acting opportunities and also disrupted his photography work.
According to the actor, his financial situation became so difficult that he could no longer maintain his Nissan Quest after the vehicle developed a problem with its shock absorber.
With acting and photography jobs becoming scarce, he eventually sold the car and used the money to purchase a fairly used motorcycle.
“I relocated to Badagry because I wanted to have a building of my own. It has really affected my career; it has caused a lot of setbacks, especially for my major profession, which is acting.
“I lost my Nissan Quest; I couldn’t afford to fix the shock absorber. I wasn’t getting acting jobs. I was into photography, but I wasn’t getting jobs either. At some point, the camera got spoilt. What they saw that made them pity me was nothing.
“I actually sold my Nissan Quest to buy a fairly used motorcycle; the money wasn’t enough to buy a new one. Another bad incident happened to me; I wasn’t used to the motorcycle, and I just kept falling.
“When I remember my wife and children, I had gone through with me,” he said emotionally.
Afolabi also addressed a video showing him driving a bus, explaining that he took up the job because he would rather work than depend on begging for food.
“What will I do? When I am not ready to beg for food,” he said.
The actor further recalled an encounter with a man who recognised him but questioned why an actor would be doing menial work.
According to Afolabi, the man advised him to return to the city and reconnect with people he knew in the industry.
Despite his struggles, Afolabi said he remains willing to take on any legitimate work available to him. He described himself as someone skilled in different areas and appealed to Nigerians to assist him with a reliable vehicle and better accommodation.
“A man saw me and insulted me. Are you the only one? He said I am a TV star; if I don’t know what to do, go back to the city and meet your people. He said he knows me as an actor and isn’t happy seeing me in such a manner.”
“I call myself a jack of all trades and master of all. What I hate most in my life is to beg for food. I would rather do any legitimate job. I had reasons to call passengers because I was using a minibus. Now, the engine is worn out, and I need to change it. I am ready to do any job. If I have a good car, I will use it for Uber.”
