The literary and cultural world is mourning the loss of Chief Alabi Ogundepo, the legendary Yoruba traditional poet and master chanter of Ijala (hunter’s poetry) .

He passed away on Monday, August 24, at the age of 84.

Ogundepo who was also an actor was born in Saki, Oyo State.

Through his performances and publications, he ensured that the rich heritage of his people remained alive for future generations.

Beyond his artistry, Chief Ogundepo was celebrated as a man of wisdom, dignity, and compassion.

In a statement announcing his passing, the family described him as “a remarkable literary voice whose poetry and writings reflected his deep appreciation of Yoruba culture, tradition, language, history and the human experience.”

They expressed gratitude to the many individuals, institutions, traditional leaders, and literary communities who have reached out with condolences and support.

Funeral arrangements will be announced in due course. The family has requested privacy and prayers as they come to terms with the loss. His daughter, Mrs. Dupe Ogundepo-Falana, signed the statement on behalf of the family.
