Former Super Eagles striker Emmanuel Emenike has accused operatives of the Imo State Police and waste management officials of invading his hospital in Owerri, an incident he says left patients frightened and two members of staff arrested.
The incident reportedly happened on October 21, 2026. Emenike also said a similar incident had occurred at the hospital on September 25.
In a statement posted on Instagram, the former footballer explained why the incident was particularly painful for him, given his decision to invest in his home state after a successful career in football.
He wrote:
“After representing my dear country on the international stage, playing in Europe and celebrating the trophy of winning the Africa Cup of Nations, I chose to bring my experience and success home to Imo State. I invested in my community and built a hospital – a place where people could seek care, find comfort and hold on to hope.
“It was a gesture of faith in my people and a commitment to helping my home state thrive. That is why the reports of what happened today 21st October, 2026 at Emenike Hospital are so painful. A place built to care for people should never become a place where patients are afraid and staff are left feeling unsafe. We call on the hospital community to receive the protection and support it needs.
“Imo State deserves investment. Its people deserve safety. And every hospital should remain a place of care and hope.”
Emenike, who was part of Nigeria’s squad that won the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations, said his decision to establish the hospital was driven by a desire to give back to his community.
He stressed that hospitals should be safe places where patients can receive treatment without fear, calling for the protection and support needed to keep the facility operating in a secure environment.
