Comedian and filmmaker AY Makun has recounted an experience he had while promoting his movie, The Waiter, at the same time Funke Akindele was promoting her December release.
According to AY, he probably picked the wrong time to release his film, knowing how much effort Funke puts into promoting her projects. He said he should have waited until her film had finished its cinema run before releasing his own.
AY also recalled meeting Funke at Cool FM, where the presenter suggested they both come on air for an interview at the same time. He agreed, thinking it would be a good opportunity for them to speak together.
However, things took an unexpected turn when the presenter introduced both actors and invited listeners to call in.
The presenter asked the first caller who they wanted to speak with, either AY or Funke. The first caller chose Funke. So did the second, third and fourth callers. According to AY, by the 17th call, everyone was still asking to speak with Funke.
The presenter eventually felt the need to remind listeners that AY was also in the studio.
AY said one caller even greeted Funke before turning his attention to him with an unexpected question.
In a viral post, he said:
“Hello, Funke. Is AY there? AY, when are you going to buy ticket for ‘Everybody Loves Jenifa?”.
AY said the experience made him realise just how much work Funke puts into selling her films.
He, however, got a pleasant surprise when the presenter announced that they would be taking one final call.
When the caller was asked who he wanted to speak with, he chose AY. The caller went on to appreciate him for his contributions to the movie industry, his Guinness World Records achievement, featuring Funke Akindele in his films, including A Trip to Jamaica, and his support for the comedy industry.
The caller also encouraged him, saying:
“Please, you’re an icon. Don’t let anyone intimidate you.”
AY said the caller was from Ikorodu, and that one phone call completely changed his mood.
He recalled how his shoulders were raised as he walked out of the studio because the call meant so much to him.
When AY got into his car, his personal assistant asked him if he was happy now. He then revealed that he was the one who had called into the programme and praised him, pretending to be a listener from Ikorodu.
He told AY:
“I was the last caller from Ikorodu.”
AY’s PA had made the final call himself just to make him feel better after watching how all the earlier callers chose Funke over him.
