No Nigerian has been named among the nominees for the 2026 CAF women’s player of the year award
The list was released by CAF on Tuesday, and it is the first time no Super Falcons player will make the nomination cut since the award’s inception in 2001.
The snub of Nigerian players for the biggest continental individual award was informed by the Falcons’ disappointing performance at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) and the team’s failure to qualify for the Women’s World Cup for the first time in history.
The players nominated for the 2026 award include Malawian sisters Tabitha Chamwinga and Temwa Chamwinga, and Cameroon’s trio of Marie Ngah Manga, Michaely Bihina and Monique Ngock.
Others are Zambia’s Barbra Banda, Thembi Kgatlana of South Africa, Morocco’s Hanane Ait El Haj, Marine Dafeur of Algeria, and Ghana’s Portia Boakye.
The Super Falcons were, however, compensated with a nomination for the best women’s national team award, while both Janet Akekoromowei and Oluwakemi Adegbuyi were for the best young talent prize.
Edo Queens’ Chriatiana Uzoma is also named in the running for the best goalkeeper award.
The 2026 CAF Awards will be held at the Wole Soyinka Centre for Culture and the Creative Arts on December 7.
