Senate President Godswill Akpabio has denied widespread reports on social media suggesting that the National Assembly has approved the creation of new states in Nigeria

During Tuesday’s plenary, Akpabio responded to an inquiry from Senator Abdul Ningi (PDP, Bauchi Central), who sought clarification amid mounting speculation.
Akpabio explained that although the Constitution Review Committee had received over 42 proposals for state creation, none had progressed beyond the early stages.
“I have seen over 42 proposals, but not one has gone through full deliberation,” he said. “The process of creating a state is very rigorous and has not been completed in any instance.”
He stressed that establishing a new state involves a lengthy constitutional process—including legislative approvals, a referendum, and presidential assent—which has not been completed for any current application.
Akpabio also cautioned advocacy groups and communities against holding meetings or mobilising in support of unapproved state creation bids.
“No new state has been approved by the Senate. It is premature and misleading for anyone to act otherwise,” he warned.
He urged Nigerians to ignore unverified social media claims and rely only on official updates from the National Assembly regarding constitutional amendments and related matters.
