The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested a man, David Effiong, for allegedly creating a public disturbance while dressed in full masquerade attire, despite an ongoing ban on masquerade activities in the state

Effiong was arrested on Tuesday after community members reported that a masquerader was causing chaos and allegedly damaging property in the area.

The arrest comes as part of a renewed effort to enforce the state government’s ban on public masquerade displays.

Confirming the arrest, the Commissioner of Police, Baba Azare, stated that Effiong will face charges in court.

Governor Pastor Umo Eno had earlier imposed the statewide ban on masquerade activities, citing increasing cases of violence, intimidation, and property destruction linked to masqueraders.

“By my office as Governor of Akwa Ibom State, I’m issuing an order. Anyone caught will be arrested and tried. Masquerades have been used to cause trouble in some local government areas,” the governor had declared.

He added, “As Chief Security Officer of the state, I direct the Commissioner of Police and other security heads to arrest and prosecute anyone found violating this order. Let the people have peace. This ban is effective immediately—no more masquerade disturbances.”
