American content creator Crystal Nicole has accused Nigerian actress Uche Montana of copying one of her videos and using the recreated content for a paid brand partnership.
Crystal said she initially held back from speaking about the situation because she understands that creators can take inspiration from one another. However, she felt what happened in this case went beyond simply drawing inspiration from another creator’s work.
She said: “This is not inspiration, this is plagiarism”.
According to Crystal, the post allegedly followed her original content very closely, including the wording, creative direction, flow and overall idea. She said the recreated version was then submitted to a brand as part of a paid partnership.
Crystal said she eventually reached out to Uche after making the issue public. She was also unhappy with the suggestion that the matter should simply be approached respectfully, saying she had already tried to address the situation.
She further claimed that the caption on the post was later changed to include “inspired by Crystal Nicole,” before the reference was removed and replaced with Uche’s name.
For Crystal, the issue is not about creators taking ideas from one another. She argued that there is a difference between being inspired by someone’s work and reproducing the work almost entirely.
She said she puts significant time into developing her content and felt that having the concept recreated without proper credit meant the effort behind her original work was not properly recognised.
