Andrés Iniesta, the iconic midfielder who scored the winning goal in the 2010 World Cup final, is retiring from football at 40
According to Relevo, Iniesta will officially announce his retirement on October 8, a date significant to him as it matches his jersey number.
Iniesta had been training in Dubai with his family, seeking a new opportunity to extend his playing career. However, he has decided to end his illustrious career.
“I feel like I would like to continue playing football until I feel it’s time to stop. I’ll try to play and also get my coaching qualification to see what the future holds,” Iniesta said.
Throughout his career, Iniesta achieved immense success with Barcelona and the Spanish national team. He won numerous titles, including four Champions Leagues, nine La Liga titles, two Euro Cups, and the 2010 World Cup.
Iniesta also expressed his desire to return to Barcelona in the future. “Obviously, I’d love to return to Barça someday, but I don’t know when or how. We’ll see how things unfold.”
Iniesta’s retirement marks the end of an era, leaving behind a legacy as one of the greatest footballers in Spanish history. His future may hold coaching or a return to Barcelona, but for now, Spanish football and fans worldwide celebrate his unparalleled career.
