Bishop Mar Mari Emmanuel was delivering a sermon when a man allegedly stabbed him multiple times at Christ The Good Shepherd Church in Wakeley, Sydney.
The distressing incident, captured on the church’s live-stream, showed Bishop Emmanuel being attacked as worshippers rushed to his aid. Four people were injured and taken to the hospital, including the bishop.
Outside the church, unrest erupted as hundreds gathered in protest, throwing bottles and bricks at police barriers. Riot police were called to manage the escalating tensions as chants for justice filled the air.
The alleged attacker was reportedly still inside the church, adding to the chaos. Police urged the public to avoid the area while they worked to apprehend the suspect.
This tragic event comes just days after a stabbing incident at Westfield Bondi Junction, where six people lost their lives. Bishop Emmanuel, known for his outspoken views, has garnered attention for his criticism of Covid lockdowns and vaccines.
