Apapa takes over Labour Party after Supreme Court sacks Abure

The leadership crisis rocking the Labour Party took a dramatic turn as Lamidi Apapa declared himself the party’s acting National Chairman, following a recent Supreme Court judgement that nullified the leadership of Julius Abure

A five-member panel of the apex court set aside a previous ruling by the Court of Appeal in Abuja which had upheld Abure’s position as the party’s national chairman.

Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, Apapa cited the Supreme Court’s decision as the legal basis for assuming leadership of the party. He stated that all decisions made by Abure since April 2023 are now invalid.

“All actions and decisions taken by Julius Abure since 4th April 2023 are null and void,” Apapa said, referencing the court’s ruling. “Following the decision of the Supreme Court on setting aside all judgments that recognised the leadership of Julius Abure, I, ALH BASHIRU LAMIDI APAPA, the most senior deputy national, and in consonance with our party constitution, Article 14 2(a)(b), hereby take over the running of the affairs of our great party with effect from today, Wednesday, the 9th day of April 2025, in an acting capacity, and Alh Farouk Umar Ibrahim as National Secretary.”

In a statement co-signed by several key party officials—including Deputy National Chairman (NLC) Mr Ladi Iliya, Deputy National Chairman (TUC) Dr Ayo Olorunfemi, National Secretary Alh Umar Farouq Ibrahim, National Legal Adviser Bar Oyelekan Akingbade, National Publicity Secretary Dr Abayomi Arabambi, and National Treasurer Mrs Oluchi Opara—Apapa announced that the party’s National Working Committee as constituted in 2022 will meet on Monday, 14th April 2025.

He also revealed plans to zone the position of National Chairman to the North and National Secretary to the South, and pledged to revive the party’s inactive Board of Trustees to strengthen internal structures.
