A high-level delegation from the Labour Party, led by Abia State Governor Alex Otti, visited the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Abuja on Wednesday to address recent developments in the party
According to a post on INEC’s official X handle, Governor Otti presented a Certified True Copy of the Supreme Court judgment on the party’s leadership crisis. The move was aimed at promoting clarity and mutual understanding regarding the current leadership structure of the party.
The delegation was received by INEC’s Acting Chairman, Sam Olumekun, alongside other National Commissioners. Discussions during the meeting focused on enhancing collaboration between the commission and the party, and reinforcing democratic values.
Olumekun assured the Labour Party of INEC’s commitment to neutrality, transparency, and adherence to the rule of law in the performance of its constitutional responsibilities.
The visit comes days after the Supreme Court overturned a Court of Appeal judgment that had recognized Julius Abure as the Labour Party’s national chairman. The apex court ruled that the appellate court lacked jurisdiction to interfere in the party’s internal affairs.
PUNCH Online reports that Olumekun is currently serving as INEC’s Acting Chairman, as Prof. Mahmood Yakubu is away in the Gambia attending the ECOWAS Network of Electoral Commissions meeting.
