The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) reported that its headquarters in Abuja, known as Labour House, was invaded by armed security forces on Wednesday night.
Benson Upah, NLC’s Head of Media and Public Relations, issued a statement about the incident, urging an international investigation.
According to the NLC, a group of heavily armed security personnel, including Nigeria Police Force members and plainclothes individuals believed to be from the Department of State Services (DSS), arrived at Labour House around 8:30 PM, after working hours.
The security operatives allegedly arrested the on-duty guard and forced their way into the building, searching for incriminating materials related to the #EndBadGovernance protests.
The NLC condemned the invasion as a severe violation of democratic norms, noting that such actions were not even taken during military rule.
The statement criticized the raid for lacking legal authorization and raised concerns about the implications for democratic rights and freedoms in Nigeria.
In response, the NLC has instructed its staff to avoid the Labour House until it is confirmed that no incriminating or harmful materials were planted by the security operatives.
The organization is demanding the return of all confiscated books and materials and the immediate withdrawal of security forces from its premises.
The NLC warned that if such harassment continues, it might call on its members to stay home until their safety is guaranteed.
