The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has put the Federal Government on a 21-day notice, threatening to embark on a nationwide strike if its demands are not met
This decision was made at the end of the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held at the University of Ibadan.
According to sources within the NEC, the notice is a requirement under labor laws, and the union is ensuring that all actions are taken in accordance with the law. The notice will be transmitted to the Federal Ministries of Labour and Education.
ASUU has been threatening to go on strike over the non-implementation of agreements reached with the federal government, including the 2009 re-negotiated agreements, academic allowances, revitalization funds, and the proliferation of universities.
The union’s national president, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, stated that despite meetings with the Minister of Education, the agreements have not been implemented. He emphasized that the demands include:
– Implementation of the 2009 re-negotiated agreements, which have lingered for over six years
– Payment of accumulated academic allowances for over six years
– Revitalization funds to upgrade universities to standard, with only one payment made since 2013
– Stoppage of university proliferation, as many new universities are being approved without funds to run them
If the government fails to address these issues within the 21-day notice period, ASUU will embark on a nationwide strike.
