The Hisbah Command of the Bauchi State Sharia Commission has introduced new regulations for social events, prohibiting Disk Jockeys (DJs) and barring women from attending male gatherings across the state
In a statement dated July 16, 2025, and signed by Permanent Commissioner Hisbah, Barrister Aminu Balarabe Isah, the Commission said the move was prompted by increasing public complaints about rising social vices and disturbances at weddings, birthdays, and other ceremonies.

The guidelines, titled ‘Guidelines Governing the Conduct of Marriage Ceremonies and Other Festivals in Bauchi State’, outlined several prohibitions, including mixing of the sexes, dancing with the opposite sex in the presence of children, sale or consumption of alcohol, and entry of armed individuals into event venues.
Other directives include gender-based seating arrangements, suspension of activities during prayer times, and strict adherence to traditional dress codes.
The circular also bans abusive or blasphemous language, mandates segregation of social events—women-only gatherings for females and men-only gatherings for males—and prohibits traditional and cultural practices such as Sharo, Shadi, Garaya, Kauyawa Day, as well as DJ performances, Gala, and Aloba.
Activities promoting gambling, prostitution, pornography, and birthdays seen as encouraging immorality are equally forbidden.
“All recreational centers, clubs, and cultural organisations must comply with these directives or face appropriate sanctions,” the Hisbah circular warned.
Confirming the circular, Hisbah Commander Muhammad Muhammad Bununu stated, “Yes, it is from us. We issued it.”
