The Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, has disclosed that President Bola Tinubu is considering the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB)
She made this announcement during the 13th memorial anniversary of the late Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu in Owerri on Tuesday.
Ambassador Ojukwu highlighted that President Tinubu understands the importance of Kanu’s release, which she believes would help expose criminal elements exploiting IPOB to incite violence in the Southeast.
“President Tinubu recognizes the significance of releasing Kanu. It will unmask the perpetrators behind the violence and restore order. I am committed to ensuring that His Excellency grants this request,” Ojukwu stated.
She stressed that Kanu’s release is crucial in distinguishing true freedom fighters from those causing chaos in the region.
Ambassador Ojukwu also emphasized that the Igbo people are not known for violence against their own and called for a united effort to reclaim the Southeast from criminality and insecurity.
She condemned the violent “sit-at-home” orders in the region, describing them as counterproductive to self-determination and harmful to the local economy.
“Ndigbo are entrepreneurial and our brother’s keepers. We must take back our land and continue to uphold the values for which Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu fought,” she added.
Nnamdi Kanu has been in detention since 2021 after his extradition from Kenya.
