A bill proposing the creation of a new state in Nigeria’s South-West geopolitical zone passed its second reading in the House of Representatives on Thursday
Sponsored by Olufemi Ogunbanwo, the lawmaker representing Ijebu Ode/Ijebu Northeast/Odogbolu Federal Constituency in Ogun State, alongside three other lawmakers, the bill seeks to amend the 1999 constitution to carve out Ijebu State from Ogun State.

The legislation adds to a growing list of proposals aimed at creating new states across the country.
Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, who presided over the plenary, referred the bill to the Committee on Constitutional Review for further consideration.
