Biodun Stephen says producers shouldn’t be held responsible for problems in actors’ marriages simply because a film includes kissing scenes.
During a recent podcast conversation the Nollywood filmmaker explained that actors know what the profession demands before taking on a role, and their partners are also aware of the nature of the job.
She said she doesn’t make kissing scenes a priority in her films, but she won’t rule them out if they help tell the story and make the characters’ relationship feel convincing.
The film maker also pointed out that she has worked with actors who don’t want to film intimate scenes for personal reasons. Whenever that happens, she respects their decision and finds another way to shoot the scene. At the same time, she said other actors are comfortable with such roles, and that choice should be respected as well.
According to her, a producer’s responsibility is to create a safe working environment and present actors respectfully on screen not to take responsibility for what happens in their personal relationships.
She said:
“I think one of the things we are selling as actors on screen is believability. You’re selling an emotion, you’re selling chemistry, you want people to believe in this love. That can be achieved without intense kissing, and it can be done also with intense kissing. When you now begin to say things like, ‘the marriage, the home,’ I think that responsibility is on the actor who has chosen this profession, and also on the spouse of that actor. That responsibility is not my responsibility. My job as a producer/director is to protect the actor.My job is not to salvage the marriage of the actor.”
